This post from Strategy Page seems to me to be good news. What it really tells me is that al-queda is losing the battle for hearts and minds, even among the Sunnis; they have succeeded in turning the sunnis against them--and it also looks to me like the US Military has genuinely learned the right lessons from Viet Nam and thus exorcised those particular demons. (Of course, an alternative explanation might be that much of that exorcism could have come from the retirement of almost all active duty military personnel who had Viet Nam experience.)
Now: if only the MSM, politicians, and chattering classes could retire we might even hear the end of the Viet Nam analogies.

If what I read at Fourth Rail and Online Magazine is representative, I think the Iraq war is pretty much won. The numbers are all on our side. Syria is a left over. Only Iran remains as a viable force in the region.
I predict that the center of interest will move to Europe, which is the second source of terrorist ideology after Iran.
“I think the Iraq war is pretty much won.”
The war was won almost two years ago. We have been engaged in a mop up operation since that time. Just do the math: the Islamic nihilists and their more secular comrades are able to murder only around 300 people per week. At worst, maybe some 16,000 annually---in a country of roughly 26 million citizens! In many respects, the terrorists are no more than a minor irritation in much of Iraq. There is no way possible for them to take over the government.
Chuck,
I predict that the center of interest will move to Europe, which is the second source of terrorist ideology after Iran.
Perhaps it has already moved to Europe. The salfists aren't making much progress in Islamic territory using brutal tactics. Perhaps they've changed theater and tactics.
If I were zawahiri, I'd put a contract out on zarqawi for being such a whiner and loser.
Syl--or vice versa :)
Syl,
Show some cultural sensitivity willya? Surely you mean a fatwa, not a contract.
I feel like knocking on wood here but have you all noticed that suicide bombings are down in Iraq?
Terrye,
have you all noticed that suicide bombings are down in Iraq?
Yes, I noticed that too. Things are moving faster than I expected. By next summer it could all be over except washing up the dishes.
Terrye,
That is because they are having a Reunion Convention in Las Vegas.
