Never Underestimate the Importance of Economic Self Preservation

Saturday, January 28, 2006
The intellectually vapid Joel Stein recently wrote an outrageous column in the Los Angeles Times entitled “I don't support our troops." http://www.latimes.com/news/columnists/la-oe-stein24jan24,0,1168298.column?coll=la-news-columns

Radio talk show host and legal scholar Hugh Hewitt interviewed Stein and got the young man to blurt out the following:

“JS: I'm sure I make more...if they make $25,000, I'm sure I make more.

HH: But I mean, are you making twice as much as they are?

JS: Sure, yeah.

HH: Three times?

JS: Um, how much do they make?

HH: Let's just say $25,000 for an entry level guy. Are you making three times?

JS: Um, I make a significant amount more than them...”

It is a mistake not to recognize the importance of financial earnings when we discuss the subconscious motivations of the hate George W. Bush crowd. Many of these people are paid handsome salaries solely because of their loyalty to the liberal postmodernist establishment. They often possess credentials that are highly questionable. In his heart of hearts, left wingers like Joel Stein rightfully sense that a growing red state cultural milieu is not favorable to their economic advantage.

Nor to their leisure to sit back and spout re-runs of the things that made them transgressively kewl in what someone called the Duty-Free cohort.

chercher l'argent too; but as the Harvard antitrust law professor Philip Areeda used to say, "the goal of a monopolist is not so much monopoly profits, as the Quiet Life." Profit, with minimum effort, unimpeded by others' interests.

Joel's life has not been so very quiet lately, which wouldn't have been the case before easy-to-ignore Letters to the Editor became the 'Sphere.

To paraphrase James Carville, “It’s the salaries, Stupid!” Today’s professional lefties are not living in poverty. These intellectually shallow human beings often “earn” an annual six figure salary. This nonsense is slowly but most assuredly coming to an end. On a gut level, the Joel Steins of the world know their days are numbered. He will soon be lucky to sell used automobiles for a living.

I looked it up. Here is Stein's column. When all you good little chickenhawks are done assuaging your guilt by "disinhibiting" yourselves all over his butt why not get down to your local Army recruiting office to give our soldiers in Iraq what they really need? Enough new replacements so they can rotate back home for good after a tour of duty in mesopotamia. Bush's war, your
war that you're so sure is a moral and practical necessity can't be won without the sacrifice of people like you. You're either with the President or you're with Joel Stein.

"You're either with the President or you're with Joel Stein".

Gee,that's a hard choice Markg8!

Joel Stein Date of Birth: 23 July 1971,hey he's only thirty five, you could get him to enlist, you could go with him, give him some tips on his running technique.

If people like Joel Stein would shut the hell up the Democrats might have a chance.

“Joel Stein Date of Birth: 23 July 1971,hey he's only thirty five”

Thirty five? I listened to Hugh Hewitt’s interview with Joel Stein and thought that he was no older than thirty one. He literally, and I am not slightly exaggerating, sounded like an immature teenager. The dude is mind bogglingly shallow. I really don’t think he has the capability of comprehended a serious piece of writing. An no, I’m not being vicious and unfair!

markg8 said...

Judging by his bio he's apparently part of the LAT's attempt to make itself hip. They have a little poll next to his column you may want to freep to show your intolerance. Results so far:

Can you oppose the war in Iraq and still support U.S. troops?

Yes, the U.S. has a volunteer army, but they were not the decision-makers in going to war.
(5093 responses) 62.3%

No, if you believe the war is wrong then all participants involved share the blame.
(1569 responses) 19.2%

I don't know. Why did you hire Joel Stein again? (1516 response) 18.5%

He should spend some time reading Ben Stein who never forgets to thank the troops for whom he says he owes all his emotional and material blessings.

I really, really think a tv show with David Gregory, Terry Moran and this Klein clown should be sponsored by the GOP.

The money angle sure enough is oft overlooked.

Al Franken, for example, has a 2mm contract (underwritten by "RealNetworks" owner Rob Glazer's donations), going to 3mm next year (half the programming budget), for a show that pays to be on the air, rather than is paid to be on the air.

So, since the show is paid-propaganda masquerading as a normal radio show, why should anyone expect that Franken will ever do anything other tha try to beat himself in a race to the bottom of the political barrel?

a guy named Brian Maloney at RadioEqualizer keeps an eye on the show (scroll to 26 January 2006
Response To O'Reilly Factor
), and the legal trouble over the way it took 800k from a children's charity (via some sort of accounting chicanery the details of which I haven't followed).

If Al was a righty, of course, we'd have details atop cascading details, 24/7.

But my point is that a failing, banckrupt 'movement' show is being held over the fire by the ten-times-normal host-compenasation, and the host would have you believe that he's a fervent conscience-driven Man of the Left (of the type that would do the show gratis until it got up and going, for 'the movement').

Ha ha ha, ho ho ho, hee hee hee!

So in the UK they took a vote amongst your soldiers and asked if they wanted to go to Iraq chickenhawk? Or do they go where they're ordered?

And for the comprehension impaired like Peety I didn't write that question, I downloaded it from the LAT's poll. Does the Oxford dictionary
have a photo of you next to the word cretin? They ought to.

markg8 said...

Ben Stein thanks the troops for all his emotional and material blessings?
He must own a lot of Halliburton stock. Still doesn't explain his emotional blessings does it? Maybe his
lover is in uniform.

Buddy Larsen said...

You should read a little of ben Stein before you apply the auto-pub-smear. mark. He's saying the same thing about the economy that you're either saying or pasting. The "Look Out for the Debt" message is right up Dem alley. Tho I still like his thinking, as it points out the idiocy of Dem leadership on SocSec, even as that leadership cries croc tears--or at least illogical tears-- over the coming debt plight of everyone's grandchildren.

Is there any way to make the font larger in these damn dialogue boxes? So someone over 20 can read the mofo things before posting, so ya can see the diff tween a comma and a period?

terrye said...

Only 25% of the men in Iraq voted for Kerry.

I don't think the left realizes how much the troops resent being treated like torturers, baby killers, children and morons.

Peter UK said...

Again Markg8 you have used a quote which you have not queried or disowned, which thus identifies this ridiculous statement with you.
Of course armies go where they are ordered,if you had served you would have known this.
The point about armies voting for which war they fight is simply a silly strawman argument.
Cretin, an interesting, epithet,I presume you picked it up after hearing it so often, did you think it was a compliment until you found out? Children are so cruel.

David Thomson said...

I am convinced that Joel Stein is incapable of reading a half way serious book. He would fail miserably if asked to spend two hours reading a work authored by Victor Davis Hanson, Christopher Lasch, Midge Decter, or countless other profound thinkers---and then afterwards sit down and discuss it. Moreover, he is typical of today’s radical leftists. They are, to be blunt, marginal illiterates.

Peter UK said...

Yes Buddy I agree,it must be hard for Markg8 to crayon in.

Peter UK said...

David Thomson,
I m,ust disagree, there is nothing marginal about them.

I don't think the left realizes how much the troops resent being treated like torturers, baby killers, children and morons.

I don't think the Left gives a good g*d*n about working people or real people in the least. Most of the Left has never even met such people except when they come to their large houses to clean (but those working people are usually illegal immigrants who don't speak the language anyway). Working people are just props in the mental plays of the Left at this point. The Left isn't about working people at all; it's about limousine liberals who have trust funds or other extremely lucrative sinecures, university professors who can never be fired, people with large inheritances, people like Joel who have extremely lucrative contracts to pontificate, and the like. Working people have become an abstraction only for the Leftists.

gumshoe1,
Having read Markg8s comments elsewhere the exercise is one of boosting his self importance,it is the frisson he gets from being behind the lines of the VRWC,"sticking it to the man".
Markg8 is a hero worshipper manque,he will believe anything as long as it comes from a famous leftist, hence a purported 50 year old can quote some snivelling young kid like Joel Stein saying this "You're either with the President or you're with Joel Stein".
Laughable if it were not so pathetic.

markg8 said...

Hey folks I'm not the one who's in a snit over Joel Stein, I never even heard of the guy until I read something funny about the Hugh Hewitt dustup with him the day before yesterday.

Let me reiterate, even if it does drive you batsh*t crazy, the war in Iraq won't end because Cindy Sheehan, Michael Moore, Howard Dean, Joel Stein or anybody else including me is against it. It'll end because the US Army isn't capable of sustaining the occupation of that hostile foreign country much longer. As it is we never did have enough troops to provide security for the Iraqi people or rebuilding projects, we have barely enough to secure our own supply lines.

We can't sustain our presence because the Army is losing a lot of it's backbone, the noncoms and young officers with 5 to 10 years experience and they're increasingly being replaced with people who can't score above 33% on the AFIQ test and various high school dropouts, petty criminals, etc.

I respect your son's service
spector, if he's like you he's no doubt an exception the above. But that doesn't mitigate the trend and won't change the outcome.

What might change it is if a great number of chickenhawks, bright young men of means with no families yet to support who vociferously back the president volunteered to join the US Army sans the large bonuses that cost the DOD so much to find and retain competent soldiers these days. People like these guys.

The College Republicans claim to have over 120,000 members. If just a fraction of them signed up we wouldn't have this problem. If they held recruitment rallies instead of ridiculing Democrats who serve or or figuring out how to bilk old folks out of their life savings it'd show their patriotism and true support for the president's policies. But they don't.

This is your next generation of Republican leaders and just like the overwhelming number of the current generation when it comes to personal sacrifice for a cause they believe in that's somebody else's responsibility.

Peter UK said...

"This is your next generation of Democratic leaders and just like the overwhelming number of the current generation when it comes to personal sacrifice for a cause they believe in that's somebody else's responsibility".

Hell! A lot of the Democrats wouldn't go in the 70s...and they still won't go!

markg8 said...

Chickenhawk we didn't believe in the justification or execution of the war then and don't now. You on the other do. Why not follow Prince Harry's lead?

"Harry hopes to become an armoured reconnaissance troop leader at the forefront of army operations.

In an interview to mark his 21st birthday in September, Harry insisted he would be willing to serve on the front line once his training days as Officer Cadet Wales are over.

"There's no way I'm going to put myself through Sandhurst and then sit on my arse back home while my boys are out fighting for their country."

Make mummy proud Peety. Get down to your local recruiting office tomorrow chickensh*t.

Why not join the British army where you can insult the real enemy - the "Islamofacists" - directly if not effectively? Most Iraqis won't understand a word you say but then when has that ever stopped you from screeching gibberish?
