Harry Reid stepped in it this time

For everything you might want to know about Senator Harry Reid's dubious doings check out AJ . Even Rush Limbaugh mentioned the Strata-Sphere on his radio show. And check out the comment section for a list of land deals by the good Senator. People forget that a lot of this stuff is in the public records.

  1. Glenn Reynolds is saying we need more accountability and transparency, and he's thinking maybe term limits are a good idea.

And people are saying, yeah, corruption in both parties, screw 'em all.

I say (like who am I, but well, anyway) this is American politics. Not as corrupt as Europe BECAUSE we are transparent and accountable.

Damn, it's hard enough being a politician in America, with all the friggin' scrutiny. When there's corruption we root it out, therefore there is enough transparency.

And I still think term limits are stupid. If the voters are silly enough to re-elect a jerk over nnd over, well, let them have him. Even still we need a certain amount of continuity in our legislative bodies. So I disagree with term limits. Anyway, who wants out of control lame duck representatives?

Sometimes I think we should just leave well enough alone--unstead of all the hysteria about 'doing something, now!'

  2. I like the idea of term limits, although I am typically opposed to regulations such as those. And I certainly appreciate the alternative position. The president is term limited (yeah, that could be repealed but isn't going to be I think).

Although the voters of the district/state keep sending them back, the reason they do is part of the problem-they benefit from the pork (often at the expense of people in other districts and states). Also there seems a problem with these lifers getting in there and wielding influence well beyond their district or state lines. Yes, the voter loses a degree of freedom in not being able to choose anyone, but I think congress should not be this grand occupation for life. I think the country would gain more with this particlar restriction than it would lose.

  3. I think it could be argued that if we had term limits only wealthy people who ccould afford to run and anyway they are the only ones who don't have to work for a living. But then again maybe that is what we have anyway.

Once upon a time they were supposed to be citizen statesmen. But how many people could quit their jobs and run for Conress without the support of a well oiled party machine? All that takes money.

I don't like the idea of term limits because I suspect the unintended consequence would be to hand even more power to the beaurucrats. Think CIA and State where there is little electorial accountability. Now, if we revert to the olden corrupt ways where everyone gets the boot when power changes hands...
