Knuck, That line you see down the middle of the US isn't the Mississippi--it's the treeline basically. It runs through San Antonio, Austin, Dallas-Ft. Worth, OK City, Wichita, Salina, Lincoln, Fargo. West of there, trees don't grow naturally except along a few riverbeds and in a few selected mountain fastnesses and favored valleys (excepting the West Coast of course).
It's fairly well known that westerners actually possess possess quite a bit more knowledge than those in the east. This is simply more evidence of that fact.
