The End is Coming sometime after 2012 (year of the London Olympiad)
Or so predicts a leading British military strategist who foresees Europe, also under pressure from ecological catastrophes in impoverished regions, disintegrating with hordes of unassimilated immigrants, and its coastlines ravaged by a renewed piracy; he even predicts the return of cavalry in a hybrid warfare that includes high-tech weaponry. Of course, what this Times story does not take into account is the effect that our Cassandras will have on the situation they despairingly describe, if we choose not always to ignore them.
And now what shall become of us without any barbarians?
Those people were some kind of solution.
-that's very true, Skook; however, by the same human token, we are equally some kind of solution to our others, the "barbarians". That is why Cassandra is sometimes right and often just helping us insure that she's wrong.
Goths?
Hannibal hasn't even crossed the Alps. And in the end, Zama far outweighed Cannae.
We're still fooling around with Hamilcar and Hasdrubal. In another year or two when the Iraqis are fully enlisted as Numidian cavalry, the real fun begins.
PS Cassandra was disliked because she foretold unpleasant truths. Not applicable here.
The Numidian cavalry switched sides right before Zama and cost Hannibal the Second Punic War. Scipio had made use of his time, in Africa, and had laid some gold on 'em.

These groups would stay connected to their homelands by the internet and cheap flights. The idea of assimilation was becoming redundant, he said.
It's Al Gore's fault for inventing the internet. With the rising waters from the melting polar caps floating the raiding ships further and further into the heart of Europe the continent is doomed. Only the Swiss will remain intact thanks to their powerful blue sea navy.
I'm sure they'll alp us, if they're so inclined.
This is rather overblown.
"Leading" analyst? says who? What's he done in the past? How many predictions have come true?
Etc..etc..etc...
