Waiting for the end of the World

Simulating the apocalypse

Every time a meteor comes close to the earth, we all think about the end of the world - but our internal soundtrack doesn't turn off. We're also thinking about pizza or passing a slow tractor or making a turn, and for a magical instant, our lives seem to be in conversation with the stars. - Elif Batuman

An Illustrated Guide to the Apocalypse from 1047

Click any image to enlarge
In the 8th Century Beatus, a Spanish monk, created an illustrated book of the Apocalypse as described in Revelations. In the ensuing years his work was widely copied. These pictures are from one such copy: the 11th Century manuscript The Beatus de Facundus.

I found them at Flashbak's post Beatus of Facundus : A Vivid Illustrated Guide to the Apocalypse (1047). They are only a small sample, Flashbak has many more (which are also larger), as well as further explanation about them.

It's been nice knowing you guys

Whelp, the end of the world is due tomorrow, so I guess it's time to say tootles to you all. It's been a hoot posting for you guys.

I wonder how we'll go? Will it be Yosemite's super volcano blowing, an asteroid hit or a zombie infestation? I'm not sure what the Intrade odds are for any of them, but I'll admit to being partial to a long-shot apocalypse -- the giant methane gas bubble forming in the Gulf of Mexico exploding. Just think, the last thought of all of us will be, "who farted?"

Goodbye cruel world

It's been all over the news. Today, May 21, 2011 at 6 p.m. (Eastern time) the world is coming to an end according to Harold Camping of Family Radio Worldwide. It is going to start with an earthquake in Fiji and lead to the Rapture.

Well, who knows, maybe God is talking to him, maybe not -- either way I figure a little End of the World soundtrack music couldn't hurt, so enjoy the above exquisite cover, by Antony & the Johnsons, of Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door".

Surviving the unthinkable

Above is an Australian educational film which was made in the the 1980s and only recently 'discovered'. It gives tips on surviving WWIII. There is much pragmatic and valuable information in it. (HT: Open Culture)
