Summer is upon us and so many people's thoughts turn to ice cream. Here are some paintings of ice cream still lifes, ice cream shops, and people eating ice cream. As you enjoy your summer be sure to give yourself some ice cream headaches along the way.

Roller coaster ice cream

The above video is of a cart somewhere in India that sells roller coaster ice cream. It is made by filling a drum with ice and salt and then, as the drum is rotated, covering the outer surface with milk, fruit juices and bits of fresh fruit. Toppings can be added. It is not the most hygienic looking operation, but I imagine the ice cream it produces is a tasty treat. 

These types of carts seem to be popular throughout southwest Asia. Many are motorized, but some, like the one in the video, are hand cranked. My hat is off to the guy who spends all day cranking that thing.  

  

Ice cream trucks

Summer is just over the horizon, and so our thoughts turn to the rhythms and icons of summer. The tinkling music of an ice cream truck is one of those icons. When you're a kid, ice cream trucks are wondrous things, and so the chase after them is always fondly remembered. 

I live on a dirt road so I don't get visited by ice cream trucks, but I hear them in the nearby neighborhoods. I wonder what sort of hoops you have to jump through to run an ice cream truck these days? I hope not too many, every kid should have the pleasure of chasing one on warm summer days.
