A new swimming pool

Summer is approaching and some people's thoughts turn to swimming pools. Not mine, they're a pain to maintain, but some people like the things in their backyard.

  

30 days at sea

This is a time lapse of a cargo ship traveling from the Red Sea to Hong Kong. Many years ago I sailed much the same waters, but I was on a warship and I remember the trip as being from east to west.

We had left Hong Kong and were in the Gulf of Tonkin when the Yom Kippur War started. The carrier group I was with pulled out and sailed through the Straits of Malacca and headed first to the Gulf of Oman off the Straits of Hormuz, and eventually south to the Gulf of Aden where my ship, and another destroyer, ran a blockade of the Bab el-Mendab Straits into the Red Sea.

It was hotter than hell and the sky was yellow with wind-blown sand. The Indian Ocean was beautiful.

Approaching Heathrow

A nicely done time lapse viseo of planes lining up for the approach to Heathrow airport.The drifting clouds, planes jittering in the wind and the music chosen make for a strangely evocative film.
   

Berlin hyperlapse

The above film combines time lapse and motion photography. It does it in a very striking and clever way. Normally, in films of this type, the motion component is slow and regular, in this film its creator, b-z00mi, jumps the motion component around quite a bit. The result harmonizes well with the time lapse element, and in the deemphasizes it at the same time. Altogether it is quite a nice effect.
 

Earth, stars and the ISS

In videos and pictures from orbit often times the details of the sky are washed out by the glow from the Earth. The above video does a wonderful job highlighting the fields of stars against the structure of the ISS and the dynamic surface of the Earth it is orbiting.

Old engine rebuilt to Hall of the Mountain King

Rebuilding the engine would be enough work for most people, This fellow made a time lapse video of disassembling  the engine, cleaning it, putting it back together and dropping it into his car. An amazing amount of the effort must have gone into this.

The first 12 years

A nice time lapse video of a girl named Lotte from birth to age 12 by her father Frans Hofmeester. This has been done before, usual by shooting a frame evey day or whatever interval of time they settle on. 

What's interesting about Hofmeester's approach is he filmed a short video every week, and pulled a few frames from each weekly video to build the time lapse. The result is, rather than her just staring at the camera, you get a bit of Lotte's personality with each weekly clip. She appears to be a talkative young lady.

Ice rink to basketball court

It is amazing how many more seats they can add when they convert the arena to a basketball court. I also wasn't expecting the two surfaces to be perpendicular to each other.
