Prince Charles is bad enough, but now this?

I must confess my faith in the common sense of the English has been badly shaken. Newslite has an article which lists, according to a poll of 3,000 Brits, the 20 most useless gadgets of all time.

Topping the list is the electric candle, which is hard to argue against. Also on it are such things as Laser guided scissors, egg boilers, fondue sets, electric carving knives and waffle irons; all which are admittedly useless things that end up cluttering the recesses of your kitchen cabinets.

So far so good. However, shockingly the Back Scratcher comes in number 7 on the list. Backer Scratchers useless? I think not!

If you have an itch below your shoulder blades the only options you have us to become a contortionist, run into the back yard and rub your back against a tree like a cat in heat, or reach for your handy miniature wooden hand on a stick. I know the choice I prefer.

This being the internet I'll point you to Back Scratcher World where you can buy one online. Who knew you could pay up to $30 for a Premium Back Scratcher?

They also have pages on how to select, use and care for you back scratcher, as well as an informative Back Scratcher FAQ. What can I say -- unlike the silly English these people take their Back Scratchers seriously.

I have one next to my desk, one next to my Lazy-Boy and one next to my bed. I even take one whenever I travel.

You missed a perfect option that I prefer and that is politely ask the lovely lady in your life to find and scratch the itch...offer to scratch her itch and both are satisfied!

I believe it was back massagers, not back scratchers, that were judged to be useless gadgets. That makes more sense since back scratchers are wonderfully useful gadgets.

Backing up against a stout tree and having a good rub is a fine treat also.

Knuck,

I double checked the list to make sure I hadn't made a mistake. Erm... not that I would ever slap together a blog post without having all my info accurate or anything.

Anyways... you are correct, Back Massagers are on the list, but that makes it even worse than we thought because Back Massagers come in at number 12, while Back Scratchers come in at number 7, which means the Brits consider them more useful.

I think it must be one of these gizmos, which do seem pretty goofy and useless (for those too lazy to follow the link it is a combination tea kettle and alarm clock that will brew your morning tea for you).

However, if it one of these we'll know the Brits are completely daft.

Ambi,

Well, really, if she poured I'd actually drink tea - at least a cup.

The first link to the "Tea made" seems broken. But it sounds like one of those automatic coffee brewers with the timer. Never wanted one of those. Figuring out how to make a pot of coffee each morning is part of my foggy headed waking up ritual.

I cannot live without my back scratcher. If I misplace it, I panic. That and lip balm. I'd go bonkers without them.
