Journalists Are Idiots: Stories from the MSM.

From the Telegraph:
An AC-130 Spectre gunship carried out the strike. This large aircraft, modelled on the Hercules cargo plane, is stuffed with cannon and machine-guns. The AC-130 is designed to saturate a large area with gunfire, hitting every square yard in the target zone with multiple rounds.

So this was the very opposite of a surgical strike. Anyone in the path of the gunship, which departed from the US military base at Camp Lemonier in Djibouti, would have been killed.
Heh, that is some aircraft. Fill it with water and it could extinguish forest fires covering whole mountains chains. Fill it with ammo and it is a veritable showerhead of death cleansing the Somalian plains. More at EU Referendum.

And of course the dramatic photo they used shows it dropping flares over a wide area. These are designed to confuse enemy antiaircraft missiles - not offensive armament at all. But it sure fits their hackneyed anti-American text.

It's nothing short of indiscriminate carpet bombing! Dresden all over again!

That photo, BTW, is fairly well known to milgeeks. It's the AC130's Angel Decoy (that's a short video) where it fires all anti-missile flares at once. The pattern is, of course, what gives it that name.

I keep banging on about this but,the function of a newspaper is to sell newspapers and advertising,a journalist's job is to provide copy for the paper. In the mix are sub-editors who "sex up" the copy, make it as eye catching as possible.Given that journalists have to deliver a certain number of words,it is likely that the journo, knowing nothing about the subject, simply cribbed the copy from several sources. The Sub-ed could have decided that mass destruction was more exciting copy than surgical accuracy,or simply cut down the piece to fit.
The result is the sensationalism that passes for news.

That is very true Peter, and explains much.

Might I pick your brain a bit? In reading the blogs, you can see the cumulative effect here in the US of so many years of anti-American sentiment among the Europeans. Not that criticism can't be delivered, etc., but that it has become so reflexive in Europe that many Americans now simply tune it out and assume the worst. And that Europeans don't ponder the long-term consequences of our tuning it out.

Americans,or at least a good proportion of them want to be loved, this of course has the same result as the teenager at a party dying for a shag,it's a sellers market,it sits uneasily with being the most powerful nation on earth. So the bottom line is they hate you for being powerful and despise you for being vulnerable.
There is another strand,in these politically correct days it is verboten to hate people on the ground of race or creed, but hey the Americans are neither of these so you are fair game. The exception is the Jews, but everyone is allowed to hate Jews, even if you live in an isolated village in the Hindu Khush you can hate Jews.
Obviously the Europeans are going to hate you,are they not cultured, nuanced,do they not drink wine and have perfect hair, better dress sense, how on earth can it be you being the most powerful nation and not them? They did it for so long with not a hamburger in sight.
On the down side when the love you ,your star will have waned

Well I have gotten to the place where I don't much give a rat's ass anymore myself.

Let Brazil or Venezuala take care of the next tsunami.

Even more well-said.

"they hate you for being powerful and despise you for being vulnerable."

PeterUK, once again, gets to the gritty.

I do not disagree, but the one part missing from that equation is...they hate us because they fear us.

Are we capable of engendering that emotion anymore, or, are we lost?
