In the comment section of my earlier post USS Iowa firing its main battery we had a brief debate as whether the battleship moved sideways at all from the force of the guns firing.
KurtP at has a post at A trainwreck in Maxwell which shows a different angle of a battleship firing a broadside.
He points towards wake patterns at the bow of the ship, and suggests that at the very bow there is a pronounced wake on only the firing side. Perhaps the lighter bow of the ship does get pushed a little by the firing?
