Spliced portraits

These are collages the artist John Stezaker made by combining cropping and titling old publicity shots to make a new portrait. He's been doing this sort of work since the 1970s, but only in the last 10 years or so has he received any notice by the art community.

Not to be too snarky, but I wonder why his work has been discovered? When you get over the surprise, there isn't much heft to them. They're not much more than a graphic arts equivalent of a parlor trick. Entertaining enough for a quick blog post, but significant enough to hang in a gallery?
