Underwater crop circles of lust

Click any image to enlarge
The Japanese diver and underwater photographer Yoji Ookata recently discovered elaborate underwater patterns in the sand that bring to mind crop circles of UFO lore. He returned with a camera crew to film what was happening and they discovered the structures were being made by male puffer fishes.

the males use a single fin to move the sand and the result of their work not only attract female pffer fish to mate with, the ridges protest the eggs that they lay from currents. You can read about it in more detail, as well as see more pictures, at  Spoon and Tamago's post The Deep Sea Mystery Circle – a love story.
