Let's Pretend

...this will just go away if we don't pay too much attention to it:
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, cheered by thousands of supporters, signalled on Friday he stood by his call for Israel to be wiped off the map, while Iran's foreign ministry sought to defuse a diplomatic storm.

After all, Bill Clinton successfully pretended Osama Bin Laden wouldn't do any serious harm to our country, and it worked, more or less, through the full eight years of his two terms in office.

Besides, maybe they will only destroy Israel, and will stop there.

(Once you start pretending, it's hard to stop.)

I think one of the most chilling things is the lack of condemnation from Islamic nations.

Not one.

Israel has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. I wonder if action will be taken quickly.

Does anyone think sanctions could work?

OK, I'm always trying to read the symbolism. And I read this latest from Iran as also an attack on liberal America. You probably know that the Middle East imports much of its antisemitism, as with much else, and is now full of the old European conspiracy theories. And you know that Hitler often talked of a Jewish-Masonic conspiracy and that this rhetoric is repeated in the ME today. And you may know that the creator of Star Trek - that font of spirituality for the present generation of American "blue castle" liberals - Gene Roddenberry was a Freemason and that Star Trek uses various Masonic symbols.

Well, go now and look at this photo of the theme art for the "World Without Zionism" conference:
see here
Note how the center or lower half of the Star of David has been transformed into a Star Trek insignia? Or is it just a fortuitous result of an artist painting on a sphere? Am I crazy to imagine that they are now also declaring war on Trekkies (as a kind of Zionist?), along with the Masons, Rotarians, and associated phenomena?

When will people realize that these guys mean what they say?

I bet that if someone told Jimmy Carter a bunch of Iranian religious fanatics are going to capture the American Ebassy in Tehran and hold its staff hostage for over a year...he would have said that was silly. Why would they do they a thing like that.

Because they are Iranian religious fanatics. If they get their people killed that is ok fine with them.

Sam,

I don't think there's anything that will wake the Euros up. Other than PeterUK, of course: he's been awake the whole time.

Even by Iran's standards, such belligerency is hard to fathom. It is isolating them badly -- even Russia and China aren't inclined to go to the wall to protect them.

This smacks of something primarily aimed at internal consumption to me.

The Iran/Irag border is porous in both directions. Could the Iraqi elections have been the catalyst for the mullahs to feel the need to raise the rhetoric level and control the dialog inside of Iran?

"I'm gonna kill you!" Nah, they didn't mean it.
"No, really, I am gonna kill you!" Nope, they still don't mean it.
"We are NOT screwing around here, we really have real hatred for you, we wish you would die, and we will do whatever we can to make that happen." It's all just talk, they really are just mis-guided. They wouldn't dare. Islam is the religion of

The entire friggin planet can talk about Islam until they are blue in the face, it will not change a thing.

Whilst we all talk it to death, they are killing and planning and plotting and building nukes.

They tell us about it. And still we talk.

Islam tells us to our face they are working towards our destruction.

The U.N. probably gives them aid to accomplish it.

Too much talk, not enough action.
It is all good and well to be the "kinder, more compassionate West."

When the mushroom clouds blossom from the BS, I guess the pictures will be cool.............
