The End is Coming sometime after 2012 (year of the London Olympiad)

Monday, June 12, 2006
Or so predicts a leading British military strategist who foresees Europe, also under pressure from ecological catastrophes in impoverished regions, disintegrating with hordes of unassimilated immigrants, and its coastlines ravaged by a renewed piracy; he even predicts the return of cavalry in a hybrid warfare that includes high-tech weaponry. Meanwhile, a Monty Python alumnus anticipates the shift:
"We actually owe far more to the so-called ‘barbarians’ than we do to the men in togas."

Of course, what this Times story does not take into account is the effect that our Cassandras will have on the situation they despairingly describe, if we choose not always to ignore them.

They're just Waiting for the Barbarians.

And now what shall become of us without any barbarians?
Those people were some kind of solution.

-that's very true, Skook; however, by the same human token, we are equally some kind of solution to our others, the "barbarians". That is why Cassandra is sometimes right and often just helping us insure that she's wrong.

It is a given that the worst never quite seems to come true - it is always something else. Still, the hour is late for the Europeans. It is one thing to finally wake up and draw the line against PC, in however tentative a way. It is quite another to be a prosperous, self-confident culture.

There's a silver lining here. The pirates will prey on yachts and exclusive clubs and, on their forays inland a bit, limos and such. That'll turn the coctail circuit crowd on them and we'll finally be able to deal with them without all the gnashing of teeth and wringing of hands from the glitterati.

Just watch how fast the "liberals" start screaming for barbarian blood the first time one of Soro's yacht parties gets hit and the guests have to spend a few weeks in a Barbary dungeon waiting for their ransom to arrive.

Goths?

Hannibal hasn't even crossed the Alps. And in the end, Zama far outweighed Cannae.

We're still fooling around with Hamilcar and Hasdrubal. In another year or two when the Iraqis are fully enlisted as Numidian cavalry, the real fun begins.

PS Cassandra was disliked because she foretold unpleasant truths. Not applicable here.

The Numidian cavalry switched sides right before Zama and cost Hannibal the Second Punic War. Scipio had made use of his time, in Africa, and had laid some gold on 'em.

When an Iranian nuke turns LA into a glass parking lot, we'll see what happens.

Mad Max forsaw it all--

These groups would stay connected to their homelands by the internet and cheap flights. The idea of assimilation was becoming redundant, he said.

It's Al Gore's fault for inventing the internet. With the rising waters from the melting polar caps floating the raiding ships further and further into the heart of Europe the continent is doomed. Only the Swiss will remain intact thanks to their powerful blue sea navy.

I'm sure they'll alp us, if they're so inclined.

This is rather overblown.

"Leading" analyst? says who? What's he done in the past? How many predictions have come true?
Etc..etc..etc...
