Here is an interesting article in The Age about
a developing split in the Iraqi insurgency (HT
Tim Blair). The reporter is Ghaith, who did some great reporting on the insurgents in Fallujah back before the assault. I have always liked Ghaith's work, going back to when he blogged as G and hung out with Salam Pax of dear_raed. Worth a read.

First comment: beware of the source.
Second comment: notice that the man in question is a former member of Saddam's Intelligence Service. He has a rather obvious interest in maintaining the pre-Ameircan status quo. Though the article goes to some length to mollify his probable complicity in some very approbrious behavior, the reader should bear that in mind. Though the article seeks to portray him as a good-hearted nationalist just trying to protect his village, he may be nothing of the sort.
Nonetheless, it's an interesting portrayal. Between this and the reporting being done by Michael Yon, it seems we can get a pretty clear idea of what's really going on over there. I believe that all the reporting being produced by the likes of the NYSlimes and CNN can be completely written off on a first pass. They're anti-American political agenda and their recent record of immense moral turpitude have rendered them incapable of being trusted except by the most gullible orby the truest believers.

I don't think Ghaith is sympathetic to these guys or wants to see them win; he is a Christian and has been sarcastic about the Sadrists among others. He is also the guy who shoved a camera in the faces of Saddam's relatives standing over the open grave and took pictures when Qusay and Udey were buried. No, not a sympathiser, but I do think he is fascinated by the terrorists, their origins, and their motives. I find that he is a good source on what sort of people they are. Gutsy guy, too.
