Can't defeat the Iraqis in Iraq.

Friday, January 13, 2006
Confederate yankee makes this observation in his 1/12/06 post Tactical Seppuku. But he is talking about AlQaida.

It never ceases to amaze me how people who oppose the war assume an AlQaida jihadi from Jordan can win in Iraq, but we can't. Well, in almost three years we have lost fewer people in Iraq than we lost on September 11 in the USA. This is in a country where our people are vastly outnumbered.

As to whether the cultural legacy of Islamic radicalism can be countered by Democracy only time will tell. But the Iraqi people have made it plain by their votes and their willingness to step forward and join the new security forces that they want a new future without Saddam.

As hard as that is for some people to believe. But then some people have not had to live in a country where people are skinned alive.

A Terrye-ism at their finest! You really are a wonder to behold.

They cannot see the similarities because they are hopelessly lost in the differences. They are, in short, defeatists.

A-Q cannot win in Iraq if we will not let them win. We cannot lose in Iraq if we refuse to do so. It really is that simple. A-Q is a bunch of murderous losers. Kill them until there are no more of them. The Iraqis, as far as I can tell, are in agreement. They are dying in this fight in far greater numbers than we are. That ought to count for something. It does to me. Apparently it doesn't to the defeatists.

Because to some this is not a real war it is a virtual war conducted mentally and rhetorically,it exists only in their heads. Thus a psycopathic serial murderer can win,to people whose reality is television, films, video games,Dungeons and Dragons and whatever fantasy the MSM wishes to serve up.
It is extraordinary how many troll for example, are role players in on line games. It has to be taken into account that many think the Matrix is real.

Forget the anti-war lefty moonbat types, the 'sensible' Dems are against this war because they think it's creating more jihadis than it's killing.

Chris Matthews is an example. (Kaus, too).

I say to them, that is the point. When you fight an enemy, he fights back. And others join in.

And thus the enemy is demonstrating more and more to the world, but especially other muslims, how craven, nihilistic, and cruel they are.

The Democracy project gives Iraqi's hope for their future that they never had before. That also fuels them to reject the jihadi's, which they are doing.

Even the insurgents!

If we had not invaded Iraq, if we had simply played a game of whack-o-terrorist, the apathy and quiet support in the muslim world for the jihadis would simply have continued.

But now they see the forces of jihad as a danger to themselves as well. And the world needs the muslim world to reject them. We cannot win this war just by killing terrorists.

Nobody on my side of the political spectrum thinks Al Qaeda has the remotest chance of winning in Iraq. They've never been estimated as anymore than 10% of the insurgency by anyone as far as I've seen. Same goes for their dream Taliban style caliphate from Indonsesia to Morroco. That is the nightmare of people who believe every word that comes out of Dick Cheney's mouth. We're waiting not so patiently for you to get over such fears.

Drilling down to the NYT article CY cites we find Iraqi insurgents having an argument with foreign terrorists about tactics. Is this real or more US planted propaganda? It is the NYT so who knows. But I've been reading these reports for weeks. "Sunni insurgents are consultation with the Americans." etc. etc. No better way to split the enemy than tell the world one sect is negotiating with the occupation. Juan Cole seems to believe it and a lot of these Sunni groups are alllied with the political parties that supported the election so chances are some of the reports are true.

Hey some possible good news! "ABC News is reporting that a US air strike on a village at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border may have killed 5 high-ranking al-Qaeda figures, including the organization's #2, Ayman al-Zawahiri."

AQ winning or losing in Iraq is not the point

The rejection of the violent Islamic movement by the muslim world is.

Allowing a 'low-level' of violent jihadi attacks around the world because of the notion that AQ can't win is ridiculous. Can't win what? Ever hear of dhimmitude? Community after community falls to taliban-like rule because of the violence. An entire island in the Phillipines was just given up to the Islamists.

This is not the IRA we're talking about, it's reach is enormous. And the weapons available today should give anyone pause if they consider a little bit of terrorism now and then isn't such a big deal.

This is an ideological movement--not just one of grabbing some little bit of real estate in one corner of the globe.

Peter UK said...

What the fuq is that?

markg8 said...

So we will bomb them, raid their homes, lock them up and torture them until they reject violence or until they're all dead?

Peter UK said...

It is the capacity to understand that those who flew the planes on 9/11 did the worst that the could do under the circumstances, but is they had had a nuclear weapon or smallpox they would have used that. This capacity is completely absent in the left, the ability to see that they don't "Expect you to talk, they expect you to die".
The fact that a Western democracy Spain capitulated completely to a bunch of tribesmen, that Holland is running scared of the actions of one murderer, never registers with the left.
As for the Caliphate,it is the restoration of the Caliphate they are fighting for.

Exactly right.

That is, if by "them" you mean the terrorists.

If you don't, then who do you imagine we are bombing?

Anyone who mourns the loss of Saddam's regime is in no position to even talk about torture.

Btw I think the whole torture allegation is self serving crap. We have spent more time and energy discussing these detainees, deciding their fate, getting them lawyers and clerics and Korans and in general obsessing over their fate than most countries of the world would ever dream of.

But we are dealing with fanatics here who do want to bring back the Caliphate, and they don't care who they kill to do it. Kafir or true believers. They love death and feel that their religion should rule the world. Crazy I know, but that does not make them any less dangerous.

Muslims must reject this. For too long Westerners and Jews and Hindus and Buddhists have been picking up body parts.

If you want to radicalize all of Islam you can continue convincing them that the WOT is indeed a war on all of Islam. You can't destroy ideas, yearnings, or a religion with bombs.

You can subjugate entire nations with enough troops and weaponry. The example of Iraq isn't working because we don't have enough troops to shepard it's transition to a secular government that is willing to treat all it's people equally. Even your friends at Iraq the Model are dispirited.

In the face of this and political disasters at home we have a new rightwing echo chamber offensive to gin up fears and expand the war. At a time when the world faces multiple serious, possibly civilization crippling challenges like the rapid industrial expansion of China and India coupled with dwindling fuel supplies your answer is to play into the Islamic radicals' hands instead of encouraging it's moderate elements. That PR offensive isn't geared to win the war in Iraq or a wider clash of civilizations. It's the tried and true method of manipulating public opinion to bolster the Republican party's poll numbers in the face the coming NSA hearings, Delay/Abramoff scandals, the dismal implemention of the Medicare drug plan, the folly in Iraq and various other chickens coming home to roost here at home.

It's the same kind of ugly political posturing the president of Iran uses when he calls for the destruction of Israel. And you're falling for it like you have since 9/11.
