That must be an AM (east coast) picture. Later in the day would have the West almost as dense as the east.

It is roughly 8AM-ish or thereabouts Eastern time. Looking at a larger picture (these are worth tracking down at the site MHA linked to) you can see the inbound swarm from Europe start arriving. Later in the day the outbound swarm builds and departs. It is fascinating to observe how flights swarm back and forth as the day progresses.
