Maher and Rosie might think there is no difference between relgions...They don't, not really.I think I've already told this one, but here goes. Right after 9/11, I had a conversation with a guy who had been educated in Catholic school, who hated it, and who claimed that the priests who taught him were "just as bad" as the Taliban. So we debated this at length and finally he conceded that they may not have been quite as bad but that "they were tending in that direction".Since then, I've had several equally tedious experiences. In the end, if you press them hard enough, they always back down at least a bit. In part, they say this stuff because they simply can't visualize the barbarity of such far-off cultures. And in part, it is just that they hate Christianity more.
skook:I was looking at Hugh Hewitt's and there was a post up on the Maher show, it seems that the guest all agree, atheists don't start wars. There was also some remark about bin Bush or something and not long ago I was reading on the Anchoress about some idiot remarks Rosie had made comparing southern Baptists to Islamists. My Grandmother was a southern Baptist. So far as I know she never flew any planes into any buildings.I think people who make these kinds of remarks are very provincial and very ignorant.
terrye:Yeah, I guess Hitler and Stalin don't count. You are right - it is just provinciality and ignorance.
There was never any doubt that she forgave. Odd, these people of religion. I wouldn't have fogiven.
Hitler and Stalin were Southern Baptists? Go figure.
Ignorance of the anthropological and historical nature of religion is perhaps the greatest or most fundamental reason why at least half the population of the west just doesn't get what's going on. However, the fact that our enemies keep insisting that they are acting in the name of their sacred religion, all Religion of Peace advocates notwithstanding, may eventually sink home. In this respect they do us a favour in clarifying the issue. Just think how different the west would be if everyone could really grasp where the Jihadis were coming from.
Well, let's not forget the postmodern "all opinions are equal" point of view here. In such a world, it's just as valid and reasonable for a Jihadi to want to personally cut your throat as it is for Sweden to vote Socialist.
mha:That depends on whose throat it is. These people can get pretty excited when their own butts are on the line.
“I think people who make these kinds of remarks are very provincial and very ignorant.”I refuse to cut many of them slack. A large percentage have “earned” advanced degrees behind their name. Such obvious fraud should not be excused.
david:That does not mean they are not provincial.
