Hmm. Well, there are lots of parallel universes out there. It would seem that they generally arise when people are really hurting. For example, there's the Black parallel universe, where black people are never responsible and all of the world's evil is due to white racism; there's the Confederate parallel universe where Southerners are never responsible and all of the world's evil is due to the Reconstruction; there's the European parallel universe, where Europeans are never responsible for anything and all of the world's evil is due to America's role as the new Rome (if not to Bush personally); there's the Democratic parallel universe where the American people want to vote them in and they were robbed by nefarious Bush-backed vote counters in Florida.
Obviously parallel universes can offer a necessary salve when in serious pain and obviously they can be dangerous.
Come to think of it there's a book on this subject which Catherine Johnson mentioned once on Roger's blog, a book written by some German guy about how people respond to losing. I wonder what the name was....
