Dominic Serres (1722–1793) was born in France. After studying at a seminary, he moved to Spain where he became a merchant sailor. Eventually, in the Caribbean, he was captured by the British and imprisoned. While in prison he took up painting. Upon release he moved to England and began his career as a painter of maritime subjects, most generally warships of the time.

Took up painting in prison? Pretty fancy prison. Got out of English prison and moved to England? Does not compute.

Well, he was a merchant sailor, and a ship's captain at that, so he probably wasn't treated that bad.

I read a book once where an English fellow who was press-ganged ended up on a ship that ran ashore on a French channel island. He got captured by the French. His group had to walk for a few weeks to the French POW camp. Once there he eventually got a job working for a baker in town.

Even during WWII there were German POWs sent to camps in the States and some of them ended up working on farms and whatnot. Some of them even ended up living in the States when the war ended -- they just liked it better.

He certainly lived an interesting life. I would like to know more about him.
