The above image is swiped from a Dave Barry column. While it looks accurate to me, there is one detail I have a quibble with; why, unlike all the other Pilgrims, is the Pilgrim carrying the ball barefooted? Was he Plymouth colony's vagrant? Was he going native and soon to be living in a teepee in the woods? Was he America's first proto-hippie? Why? Why? Why? The questions abound, but there are no answers.

Anyway, enjoy your turkey and the football games (unless you're a Lions fan) and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm not sure why this turkey is so happy to be carrying that carving knife. I guess turkeys are just stupid. Also, is the pumpkin lingering from Halloween? Whatever the reasons, have a good Thanksgiving full of food, family and football (real football, not that boring stuff the rest of the World watches and mistakenly calls football).

Remember, always make sure your Turkey is smaller than your oven. Anyway, have a good Thanksgiving. Enjoy your company, the food (if it fits in the oven), and your blessings.

Thanks for the Memory

Last year, in the spirit of the holiday, I decided to post some traditional Thanksgiving music. Much to my surprise I discovered there was no such genre. Since I'm not one to let reality get in my way, I created the Thanksgiving music genre and added the Ralph Rainger/Leo Robin song Thanks for the Memory as the first entry into the genre.

Well, a year has passed, and I have to confess that I've been too lazy to add another song to the catalog of traditional Thanksgiving music, so here it is again, this time sung by Jane Morgan. Maybe next year I'll work up the energy to find a second song, but in the meanwhile enjoy, and be thankful, for what you get.

While inflation has priced Turkey out of the reach of many, that's still no reason not to have a tasty and elegant Thanksgiving feast. Certainly, you'll find a budget friendly and yummy dish to make you forget roast turkey, stuffing, cranberries and pumpkin pie. Below is one of their recipes which is sure to get your tastebuds drooling.

Hoover Stew

Ingredients: 16 oz. box of noodles (macaroni is best) 2 cans stewed tomatoes, undrained 1 can corn, undrained 1 can peas or beans (or both!), undrained 1 package sliced hot dogs

Instructions: Cook pasta until it's not quite done, then add sliced hot dogs and canned ingredients. Bring to a boil, then allow to simmer until pasta is done.

For those unlucky enough to have political zealots on both sides of the aisle, well ... enjoy them screaming at each other while you munch on your turkey this year. Remember -- patience is a virtue. For those with civil relatives, count that as another thing to be thankful for.

Thanksgiving maskers

During the 19th Century, and into the early part of the 20th Century, one of the traditions of Thanksgiving in NE American cities was masking. Like Halloween trick or treat, the children would dress up in costumes and masks and beg for candy treats and pennies.

Thanksgiving masking was frowned upon by polite society and eventually the commercialization of Halloween as well as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade caused masking to fade away.
