Jungle paintings

Click any image to enlarge

A jungle is woods in a tropical zone. It is miles upon miles of trees underneath which is a dense weed utopia. They are difficult to move through and so, like any remote area, they are cloaked in mystery and romanticized.

To temperate dwellers they contain strange tropes: from safari members nervously muttering "it's quiet, too quiet" as they watch the trees, to Rosseau-like dreams of animals frolicking together in peace instead of eating each other, to ape-raised Tarzan swinging through the trees as he yodels to elephants.

Above all, they are places where one's imagination can run as wild as the foliage.

Tarzan through the ages

Click any image to enlarge
These are Tarzan movie posters, in chronological order from oldest to newest. Regardless, no matter what decade, he is a big, goofy guy in a loin cloth hanging around the jungle with pretty girls and his ape buddies. In most of the posters it appears that his jungle had a bevy of wild critters and a handy barber shop as well.

They are from 100 Years of Movie Poster's archive: Tarzan 1918-2016. There are more after the jump, and more at the link.

Man vs Ape

Sorry for this poor quality fight scene to get you over the hump in hump day, but how could I pass up a fight between a Hindu Tarzan and a guy in a bad chimp suit. Also, aren't Tarzan and apes supposed to be buddies? Anyway, as bad as the suit is, it is still better than the monkey suits in the average 'Bigfoot captured on film" offering.

Lex Barker as Tarzan

Sometimes a banana is just a banana?

These are a series of old Dell Tarzan comics featuring Lex Barker posing as the legendary ape man. They're from a remarkable archive of old Tarzan comics -- it has literally thousands of both comic books and strips scanned in to view -- called the ERBzine.

Lex Barker was the 10th actor to portray Tarzan. after his American movie career dried up he moved to Europe where he had further success. Surprisingly he was married to Lana Turner at one time, although their marriage broke-up and there were rumors that one of the reasons for the divorce was him molesting her 13 year old daughter. Sick stuff if true.

There are more sample covers after the jump, and many, many more at the ERBzine site.
