Preparing a meal in rural Nepal

The video is from a valley in eastern Nepal. It starts with the grandparents grinding corn and millet for flour. Their grandkids, who are visiting during a school holiday, gather fruits and greens. They tend to their animals and then gather to cook and eat a meal.

The valley they're in is very lush. I always pictured Nepal being nothing but snowy mountain tops with sherpas and Yeti running about. However, where they live it is very green with a lot of foliage.

Chowing down in Imperial Rome

This video discusses meals in ancient Rome. The food they ate is also explained. Also, most Romans didn't have a means for cooking food at home, so they used street vendors to get their meals. Herculaneum and Pompeii were both buried in volcanic ash, so we have well preserved examples of the infrastructure to support their daily dining.

Tagine cooking in Morocco

This is a video of a restaurant in Sidi Bibi, a small town in Morocco, that is known for its tagine. Tagine is both a dish, essentially a type of hunter's stew, and the earthen wear it is cooked in. The meal is generally cooked in a plate, which doubles as a serving dish, atop of that is placed a cone-shaped top that traps the steam during cooking. It looks pretty tasty.

Famous hotdogs

With July 4th closing in hotdogs, one of the holiday's staples, can't be far off. The above video tours America to find famous regional hotdogs. They are, as long as you don't spend too much time pondering how hotdogs are made, a delicious looking group.

Below is a video showing how to grill hotdogs. From the viewpoint of the cooking complexity scale grilling a hotdog is basically one step away from boiling water, but I suppose to some it is a new culinary adventure, So, in case you need a tutorial, here it is below.

Nigerian dishes

These videos are from Kitwanda "Kiki" Cyrus' YouTube channel. She's originally from Nigeria but has immigrated to Texas. Many of her recipes are fusion dishes mixing Nigerian and American influences. It is all very tasty looking. She is also a photographer, so her videos are nicely presented.

Corn (maize)

Corn, also called maize, is a grain that is by weight the most produced in the world. It will not propagate naturally, it needs humans to raise it. It has many varieties and is used for both livestock feed and human consumption. These are paintings of corn cobs, corn fields, and corn being eaten.

Street food vendors

These are paintings of carts, stalls and trucks that serve food from the side of streets. Hotdog carts, taco trucks, and all manner of small enterprises that serve treats and meals.

As an aside, my son, Ambi Jr., at one point in his varied career decided he was going to operate a food truck. He bought a truck and spent some time adding all of the facilities inside it. He opened it and a week later the covid lockdowns started. Needless to say, that put a dent in his business. However, all was not lost, he kept working his regular job and his partner survived the lockdown on take-out business from the truck.

A restaurant that's been around for 162 years

This is a video of a Tokyo restaurant that has been in operation for 162 years. For dinner they only serve food from the Edo period. The tables have an area, which is covered for lunch. During dinner it is opened, and charcoal is placed in it so dinners can grill their own skewers. It's a pleasant looking place.

For a Westerner it would be confusing as all hell to order food in the place, but Japanese food is quite tasty. You would just have to expect mildly aghast looks as you committed one dinning gaffe after another as you ate.

Cooking hornets in Nepal

This video shows a family preparing, cooking and eating hornets in rural Nepal. Like many of these types of videos I suspect it is largely staged. I think the hovel they supposedly live in is actually a set, and they live elsewhere. Still, it an interesting video and certainly an exotic dish.

Buying food

Click any image to enlarge

Unless you bag some moose to lay in protein for the winter, as well as having a productive back 40, you need to buy your food. Assuming you have refrigerator grocery stores allow you to do a weekly shopping trip, while markets are more day by day. Either way, they are very much woven into the fabric of our life.

Small garage restaurant

This is a small restaurant in Japan that is ran by a single woman. Apparently, they have a lot of small shops like this. It reminded me of my youth; I grew up in an Eastern European immigrant neighborhood and there were a lot of these sort of places. However, instead of using the garage, it would be the first-floor front room of a two-story house. I have fond memories of them.

Taste testing bananas

Prior to the 1950s the strain of banana you would have bought in a store was the Gros Michel. Disease greatly impacted the Gros Michels, and cultivation switched to the Cavendish, the strain of banana that is currently the most sold type. Cavendish crops are currently being affected by disease as well, and unless a solution is found we may need to move to a new strain of banana. A likely replacement is the Gold Finger banana.

Our friend the tin can

I remember being 20 years old and I'm living by myself for the first time with my buddies and what you're worried about day to day is what am I going to eat for dinner?
I don't know how to cook, so I've got to get canned food.
Those are the only worries you have in the world.
- Brad Marchand -

The first meal was an object lesson of much variety.
My father produced several kinds of food, ready to eat, without any cooking,
from little tin cans that had printing all over them.
- Mary Antin -

I live out of cans a lot. But I try to indulge only in healthy canned food.
- Dwight Yoakam -

The path of civilization is paved with tin cans.

Making refreshing summer drinks

This post topic may seem out of sequence considering the fact that is currently the winter. However, it is my duty to as well provide content for my regulars from the southern hemisphere where it is now summer. Of course, that assumes I have any regulars from the southern hemisphere, but that's a subject we don't need to delve into too deeply.

Taste testing a Mongolian MRE

The MRE has a day's worth of meals. They are all quite substantial looking. These are from the YouTube channel Readiness Rations. He covers a lot of both military and survivalist-type MREs. Below I have included a couple that are civilian aid MREs.

Street food in Italy

As you might image, Italy appears to have some very good street food offerings. Above we have sausages, beef, pork and other substantial dishes. Below we have sweeter treats. Naturally, while wandering around and munching on your food you'll want some entertainment, so we end with a video of a rather unique busker drumming on some pipes.

Space food

As demonstrated by Homer Simpson in the above clip, eating in zero gravity is a problem. You don't want food particles floating about creating a mess, so since the start of manned flight ways have been created to provide food and drink to spacefarers in a controlled manner.

In the video below we go to the NASA's Space Food Systems Laboratory where they expain the development, and some of the issues of space food packaging. That's followed by a video of a rather chipper young lady taste testing old-timey Soviet space food. The final video is about Japanese space food. It ends with a segment about some Japanese high schoolers making canned mackerel in soy sauce which they eventually send to the ISS. The jokes about American teenagers TikTokking themselves into terminal stupidity write themselves, so I'll just leave it at that.

From paddy to table

This is a video that shows rice cultivation from planting, harvesting, processing, packaging and eventually cooking. It is a Taiwanese commercial farming operation and equipment they use to plant and harvest the rice is pretty amazing.
