US President George W Bush has been caught on microphone using an expletive as he discussed Hezbollah's rocket attacks on Israel. (BBC)
I'm sorry, but is anyone actually surprised that a 60 year old Texan would say "shit" in a theoretically private conversation?
Or particularly embarrassed?

... which is close to what I might have said.
Me too.
Is that Reagan quote apocryphal? I hope not.
Nope. Made quite a fuss at the time.
But seriously, truly, every Christian (like me), every Jew, every defender of the Enlightenment, whether believer, agnostic, or atheist, needs to stand shoulder to shoulder with the forces of civilization at this moment.
You mean when the press gets verklempt because Bush said "shit"?
The best part is that the press is giving this a big play and it is all to Bush's advantage. I love the comment and I expect a lot of others do to. Want to bet Bush's approval rating is going to go up?
It could have been worse. He could have said "...stop doing this doody". My ears are burning just thinking of it.
Actually, I'm glad the president would use language appropriate to the situation. What concerned me is the idea that anyone could "get Syria to get Hezbullah to stop doing this shit." That's not gonna happen, and I hope the Adminstration knows this. There is no getting them to stop doing this shit short of killing them. There are no negotiations with true believers who do not believe in negotiations. I'm far more concerned about more rounds of "peace" talks than I am about potty talk.
I wonder what the colloquial meaning of 'shit' translates to in Arabic.
I'd like to learn the Arabic equivalent and use it.
And, more importantly, can we all openly use the word, now? After all, America's president is the leader of the free world and if he can use the word, then, well WE CAN TOO!
BTW, Juan Cole is shuddering. He thinks Bush showed his stupidity. What's worse the world seems to agree with Bush! Juan Cole is very very upset.
