What Cliff May said ...

The Corner on National Review Online: "More and more, it appears that Israel has determined that its goal is to cripple Hezbollah. If that trick can be managed, it will deliver a blow not only to Hezbollah but also to Syria and Iran and the entire Militant Islamist movement.

It also would produce a huge benefit for the vast majority of Lebanese who do not want their country run by Hezbollah/Syria/Iran and who do know that the Israelis have no wish to remain.

Since disarming Hezbollah is what is called for by the “international community” in UN Security Council Resolution 1559, it is hard to see how even the French could call such an action disproportionate.”

It makes one wonder what the French would regard as a proportionate response. Forming a collaborationist government in Vichy, perhaps?"

StY,

Do you think that the UNSC will turn to the Iranian problem first thing tomorrow? I'm not sure if the Israelis will go into Lebanon in force tomorrow (Tues - it's now two hours to dawn in Israel). It appears that the battlefield prep is about done, the G8 statement was a whisper and the president doesn't seem to be able to remember how to say "cease fire".

All Israel needs tomorrow is for Bolton to say "we're watching the situation carefully but we have to deal with the Iranian question first" followed by Condi offering to fly over for negotiations - say in mid August.

I don't think this is turning out as Hezbollah planned.

It does seem that if the UN is going to call for Hezbellah to be disarmed they might at least think about who is going to do it.

Heh.

But I'd bet on 24-48 hours more prep. Tuesday morning, say.

Interestingly, 23 July is new moon.
